Any way for you to determine if it’s the hard drive that’s bad?
Others here will have more opinions, but my go tos are usually mid-level Lenovo and Dell offerings (Usually Thinkpad or Latitude/Precision). Those are likely not in your price range, however.

That’s a pretty tight budget for the specs. Do you have any drives to swap in to see if it’s a drive or the controller?

Th eres a Lenovo for $750 and a Dell for $9xx so it’s possible. I gave the machine to a tach guy to help

A good laptop for cheap? Ebay.
I got a 13in Lenovo Yoga with 16GB of ram and an i5 for $300. Something that doesn’t also do table duty should shave off some of the price, but the larger screen might add a bit.

If you are using this for work that gets you paid I highly recommend a Dell Inspiron 17, bought from their Work site, with as much ProSupport as you can afford to add on. They have a bit more basic and clunkier design than competitors in that price range but in my experience they hold up well and if you buy them from Dell’s business side the customer support is great if you have problems. Getting real support for a work machine in my opinion and experience is better than getting the highest spec you can for your budget.
Here’s the base one with 16 GB RAM/i7/
512 GB SSD
, $949 before any extra warranties:

Mount drive in external case if you have both it and another computer. Should be able to at the very least run a health check on the drive or scan for bad sectors in the boot area.

I have no good news about this situation since my Vaio/Sony went through the same thing. That really sucks.

My current laptop is an HP Omen 17 and it’s been a beast at folding and games. I got a decently spec’d one as a refurb for under 1200$. Get a lesser video card and you can easily get one for under a grand. I just ordered a brand new one to replace this one, but I already kinda pre-sold it.

For the kind of work you do? You could probably find a lightly used Thinkpad P70 on eBay for that money. If you're willing to downgrade to a 15.6" you can save a few hundred $ and get a P50/51 with a Quadro.

...why not just replace the hard drive for like...$70 CAD and just reinstall the OS...?

Just pointing out that you can get good specs for cheap if you look on the used/refurb market. My Lenovo would have been $1000 when it was new, but it was $300 because it’s a few years old. Still plenty powerful enough for what i use it for.

the laptop is about 10 years old so after i replac e the hard driv e i’ll end up having to replace all sorts of other stuff. The charger is already a composite of like 3 other power cords laying ar ound. it also heats up. its just time.

Eh, my DD laptop is 10 years old and my mom’s and brothers are like...12 years old and they are fine...the heat thing could be as simple as a dust buildup you could solve by spritzing all the vents and the CPU fan vent with a dustbuster air can.
I just hate seeing working tech that is easily repairable get replaced, haha!

Bummer. I’m not up on current models but there’s got to be something nice from acer/asus/msi in that range. I bought one of these for my in-laws. It’s great but not quite up to your spec.
